Hey there gorgeous people!
The Commonwealth Games are coming to the Gold Coast in 2018 and Southport, just 10 minutes from Surfers Paradise, has undergone a major facelift and is ready to welcome thousands of competitors and spectators from around the world.
Families are the big winners with Southport now offering upgraded FREE outdoor recreational areas, family friendly Broadwater Parklands, a world class Aquatic Centre and exciting water based activities like Aquasplash.
We LOVE spending the day in Southport and these are our Top 3 Cool Outdoor Activities;
#1 – Aquasplash
AquaSplash is my kids favourite activity when we visit Southport.
The floating adventure playground is super challenging both physically and mentally and my kids push themselves to the limit climbing, jumping and diving.
Fully supervised by qualified life guards, participants are provided with ultra slim life jackets and a detailed safety brief before entering the waterpark.
Sessions run for 50 minutes and I recommend booking to ensure you get into the session time that suits your schedule.
I would consider this to be an affordable family activity. On our last visit I took six kids ranging from 7 to 15 years of age and it cost $85.00 for everyone to join in the fun.
A few tips for you;
- Wear Heaps of Sunscreen this activity has no shade
- Its energy burning work out there so feed your tribe before you arrive
- Everyones going to be hungry when they finish so bring snacks
- Have plenty of water for before and after
- For spectators there is only a beach to sit on so bring a beach chair, picnic rug and umbrella
- Metered parking is everywhere so drive right up to Aquasplash and grab a spot, it’s cheap and easy
- Bring your camera!
#2 – Gold Coast Aquatic Centre
Only a few minutes walk from Aquasplash is the Gold Coast Aquatic Centre and it’s AMAZING!
Walking into the aquatic centre for the first time we were blown away by it’s size and design and grateful that we have access to world class facilities like this.
The pools are the bluest I’v ever seen, the diving pool in particular is a real feature. When we visited the 3 metre diving board was open to the public and the kids were so excited to dive like a pro. What an incredible experience for the kids!
There are life guards on duty during all opening hours and pubic swimming areas allocated for visitors.
If you’re dying for a coffee Cafe Catalina is a full service restaurant and bar located adjacent to the Aquatic Centre that also incorporates a cafe inside the Aquatic Centre. The food is delish and the coffee is well roasted, strong and hot, just how I like it.
This is a MUST DO activity when you’re visiting Southport and it’s so AFFORDABLE. Seriously, entry for the tribe of 6 kids I had with me, cost less than $30.00. Yep it’s definitely worth visiting the Gold Coast Aquatic Centre!
A few tips for you;
- Buy a coffee from Cafe Catalina, it’s great!
- Enquire with staff when diving boards are open for public use
#3 – Broadwater Parklands
It’s not often a family can enjoy a full day of fun and adventure at a world class facility for FREE.
Broadwater Parklands provides exactly that and my family LOVE it!
Huge grassy areas, heaps of shade, room to spread out and have a picnic or take advantage of the FREE BBQ’s, the parklands is the perfect setting for a family get-together.
If you need to buy lunch the Broadwater Cafe is affordable, the food is tasty and the coffee is hot.
The FREE wifi available at the Broadwater Parklands means that I can take photo’s of all the family fun and upload them straight to Facebook. I LOVE it!
My kids ABSOLUTELY FREAKING LOVE IT and spend hours running between The Giant Jumping Pillow and the Adventure Playground.
The wide concrete footpaths are perfect for scooters so if you can fit them in the car, it’s totally worth it.
The waterpark at Broadwater Parklands is perfect for kids on warm days. My kids don’t care what the weather is like, where there is water, my kids will be wet.
Gold Coast Council holds FREE and low cost events at the parklands. From The Broadwater Fair for the kids, to Yoga for mum, there is always something interesting on the calendar.
